Made with USA-grown alpaca fiber and weighing approximately 5.1 to 8.0 ounces per pair, these unisex crew socks combine a soft, cushioned interior with a durable performance exterior for warmth, comfort, and everyday wear.
These midweight alpaca socks offer a loose, comfortable fit with a generous toe area. Please view the sizing chart below to locate the ideal size.
Unlike the original Michigander, this generation wasn’t produced through a large commercial sock run. We worked with two Midwest micro mills to create the specialized sock yarn, then brought that yarn home and knit every pair right here on our alpaca farm in Northern Michigan.
Here’s Why You’ll Love the New Michigander
- Soft against your feet with a relaxed fit: A terry loop interior made from alpaca and acrylic creates plush cushioning without sacrificing breathability and comfort.
- Warm without trapping moisture: Alpaca is naturally breathable and temperature regulating, making it exceptionally well suited for cold-weather socks.
- Built for long-term wear: Nylon and spandex are incorporated into the exterior construction to add durability, stretch, shape retention, and resistance to everyday wear.
- Substantial warmth and cushioning: Depending on size, each pair weighs approximately 5.1 to 8.0 ounces and contains 51% alpaca fiber. The result is a substantial sock with generous cushioning and plenty of alpaca fiber for warmth and comfort.
- USA alpaca fiber: The alpaca used in these socks was grown on American farms in the Midwest and East coast.
- Small-batch yarn: The core sock yarn was made specifically for us at two micro mills in Michigan and Ohio. Working with smaller regional mills allowed us to keep more of the production process close to home and continue moving toward our farm-to-fashion goals.
- Farm knit: Every single pair is knit right here at Cotton Creek Farms in Northern Michigan. Jason runs our sock machine, while Rebecca washes, inspects, finishes, and labels the socks before they leave the farm. The lady alpacas are located right next to our manufacturing and warehouse facility so they can provide direct supervision over the human work activities.
Designed for Both Comfort and Performance
Our Michigander alpaca socks are designed to with purpose and each material plays a role:

- 24% Nylon: Nylon adds strength and resistance to wear, helping create a more durable sock designed for repeated use.
- 3% Spandex: Spandex provides the stretch and recovery needed for a comfortable fit that holds its shape.
The result is a warm, substantial alpaca sock made for people who actually intend to wear it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where are the Michigander alpaca socks made?
The new Michigander socks are knit right here at Cotton Creek Farms in Northern Michigan. We use USA-grown alpaca fiber, and the specialized sock yarn is produced for us by two small Midwest micro mills located in Michigan and Ohio. Once the yarn arrives back at our farm, Jason knits the socks while Rebecca handles washing, inspection, finishing, and labeling.
Are these the same Michigander socks you sold before?
No. This is a new generation of our customer-favorite Michigander sock. While we kept the relaxed fit and everyday versatility customers loved, the new version has a more substantial construction and a very different production process. Unlike the original commercially produced Michigander, the new socks use USA-grown alpaca fiber, yarn produced in small batches by Midwest micro mills, and are knit directly on our farm.
What are the Michigander socks made from?
The socks are made from 51% alpaca, 22% acrylic, 24% nylon, and 3% spandex. The alpaca and acrylic form the soft terry loop interior, while nylon and spandex are incorporated into the exterior construction for strength, stretch, shape retention, and durability.
Why aren’t the socks made from 100% alpaca?
A performance sock needs more than softness and warmth. Alpaca provides natural insulation, breathability, and comfort, while acrylic adds structure to the terry loop interior. Nylon helps protect the exterior from wear, and spandex provides stretch and recovery. Each material serves a specific purpose in the finished sock.
How much alpaca fiber is in these socks?
Alpaca makes up 51% of the finished sock. Depending on size, each pair weighs approximately 5.1 to 8.0 ounces, so these are substantial socks with a significant amount of alpaca fiber in every pair.
What does the inside of the sock feel like?
The interior has a soft terry loop construction made from an alpaca and acrylic blend. The loops create cushioning against the foot while helping maintain the warmth and breathability alpaca fiber is known for.
Are the Michigander socks cushioned?
Yes. The terry loop interior provides noticeable cushioning throughout the sock. This makes the Michigander comfortable for everyday wear, outdoor activities, travel, work, and extended periods on your feet.
Are these socks breathable?
Yes. Alpaca fiber is naturally breathable and temperature regulating. The terry loop interior helps create warmth and cushioning without making the sock feel overly dense against the foot.
Will my feet get too hot in these socks?
Although the Michigander is a warm and substantial sock, alpaca fiber helps regulate temperature and move moisture away from the foot. This makes the sock suitable for extended wear in cool and cold conditions without trapping heat in the same way some synthetic-heavy winter socks can.
Are these socks good for people with cold feet?
Yes. The combination of alpaca fiber and a cushioned terry loop interior makes the Michigander a good option for people looking for additional warmth around the foot. They work well for everyday winter wear, outdoor activities, sleeping, and relaxing at home.
Are these socks good for work boots or hiking boots?
Yes. The Michigander can be worn with work boots, hiking boots, and other roomy footwear. Because the socks have a substantial cushioned construction, they will fit best in footwear that provides enough room for a thicker sock.
Can I wear these socks with regular shoes?
Possibly, depending on the fit of your shoes. These socks have more cushioning and substance than a thin everyday crew sock, so they may feel too thick in snug-fitting shoes. They generally work best in footwear with a little extra room.
Can I wear these socks all day?
Yes. The Michigander was designed for extended wear. The alpaca-rich terry loop interior provides softness and cushioning, while the nylon and spandex exterior helps the sock maintain its shape and stand up to everyday use.
Are the Michigander socks good for hiking?
Yes. Their combination of cushioning, breathability, warmth, and durability makes them suitable for hiking in cool or cold conditions. As with any thicker sock, make sure your hiking footwear has enough room to accommodate the additional cushioning.
Are these socks good for hunting and outdoor work?
Yes. The Michigander is designed to provide warmth and cushioning for outdoor activities such as hunting, farm work, yard work, and other cold-weather tasks. The nylon and spandex exterior construction adds durability for repeated wear.
How heavy are the Michigander socks?
Finished pair weight varies by size. A Small pair weighs approximately 5.1-5.9 ounces, Medium approximately 5.8-6.6 ounces, Large approximately 6.6-7.4 ounces, and Extra Large approximately 6.8-8.0 ounces.
Are these considered heavyweight socks?
The Michigander has a substantial, cushioned construction and falls within our midweight to heavyweight range. We base sock classification on fiber composition and construction rather than finished pair weight alone.
Do these socks stretch out over time?
The alpaca fiber can naturally relax during wear, but the nylon and spandex help provide structure, stretch recovery, and shape retention. Proper washing also helps the socks return to their intended fit.
Will these socks shrink when washed?
They are designed to maintain their size when properly cared for. Machine wash in cold water and lay flat to dry. Avoid high heat, which can damage natural fibers and affect the fit of the sock.
How should I wash the Michigander socks?
Machine wash the socks in cold water using a standard gentle detergent. Lay them flat to dry. We recommend avoiding the dryer because repeated heat can shorten the life of natural fibers and elastic components.
How often should alpaca socks be washed?
Alpaca socks generally do not need to be washed after every wear. Unless the socks are visibly dirty or heavily soiled, you can often wear them several times between washes. Allow them to air out fully between uses.
Are these socks durable?
Yes. Durability was an important part of the new Michigander design. The exterior incorporates 24% nylon for strength and abrasion resistance and 3% spandex for stretch and shape retention. As with any sock, lifespan will also depend on footwear fit, friction, frequency of wear, and care.
Will the terry loop interior flatten over time?
Some compression of the terry loops is normal with repeated use. Proper washing and air drying will help maintain the softness and loft of the interior for as long as possible.
Are these socks itchy?
Alpaca fiber is known for its softness and does not contain the lanolin found in sheep’s wool. The soft alpaca and acrylic terry loop interior is designed to sit comfortably against the foot. Individual sensitivity to any fiber can vary.
Are the Michigander socks made with dyed alpaca fiber?
The alpaca fiber itself is undyed. The finished socks use mosaic blends that combine natural and colored fibers to create variations of brown, blue, grey, pink, purple, and white.
Where does the alpaca fiber come from?
The alpaca fiber is grown on farms in the United States, primarily in the Midwest and East Coast. Using domestic fiber allows us to support American alpaca farms while keeping more of the production process within the United States. The negative to this is it does increase the cost basis for these socks, since we pay for the fiber we collect from industry friends.
Why do you use two different micro mills for the yarn?
Our commercial yarn mill closed recently and the US does not have another mill that will run worsted alpaca yarn for socks. Due to this supply chain shift we reached out to two local fiber mills to seek their assistance. Alpaca Fleece Mill (in west Branch Michigan) ran our brown sock yarn, while American’s Natural Fiberworks (in Somerbill, Ohio) ran the white and grey yarn for us. We have endless gratitude to American’s Natural Fiberworks and Alpaca Fleece Mill for supporting us through this project.
What makes these socks different from commercially produced alpaca socks?
The biggest difference is the production process. The new Michigander uses USA-grown alpaca fiber, yarn processed in small batches by Midwest micro mills, and final sock production that takes place directly on our Northern Michigan farm. These are not socks we simply purchase from a large commercial manufacturer and resell.
Are the Michigander socks unisex?
Yes. The Michigander is a unisex crew sock available in small, medium, large, and extra large. Use the size chart on the product page to select the best fit based on your shoe size. Remember this is a loose fitting sock, so pay close attention to the suggested sizes and keep the fit in mind. If in question, select a size lower instead of higher.
Can these alpaca socks accommodate large feet?
Yes! Our son has a size 15 foot and finding socks to fit is super difficult. We made sure our extra large socks will fit his foot and others with larger feet.
What type of fit do these socks have?
The Michigander has a relaxed fit with generous toe space. This makes it a good choice for customers who prefer a sock that does not feel overly restrictive around the foot and toes. They also work great for people with wider feet or who have circulation issues and need a loose fitting sock.
What seasons are these socks best for?
The Michigander is best suited for spring, fall, and winter. Its breathable alpaca construction can work across a range of temperatures, but the substantial cushioning makes it particularly well suited for cooler conditions.
Are these socks made sustainably?
The Michigander alpaca sock supports our farm-to-fashion approach by using USA-grown alpaca fiber, small Midwest fiber mills, and on-farm manufacturing. Keeping more steps within the United States and working with smaller regional producers allows us to reduce our reliance on large overseas commercial manufacturing while supporting domestic farms and fiber processors.

Love these – great for miserable cold days

I love my socks!! They run a bit larger than noted in the sizing chart. I wear a size 7 shoe and bought a medium sock. It was significantly too large. I washed them and tried to safely shrink them a bit and they are still to big. I will continue to work them into my size. With that being said I wear them around the house like slippers. Totally comfy and warm. I would order them again but in a small.
